Getting Started

Install Mechvibes on Windows, macOS or Linux, get past the first-run warnings and set up your first sound pack.

Installation

Pick your system and follow its steps. It takes a few minutes.

Windows

Install with the .exe installer.

  1. Download the latest .exe installer from the download page.
  2. Run the installer. The installer is not signed, so if SmartScreen warns you, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. If Mechvibes 2 is installed, the installer offers to remove it. Click Yes, or every key plays twice.
  4. Launch Mechvibes from your desktop or start menu.
  5. When a new version is out, click Update now in the app. The download is checked (SHA-256) before it installs.

macOS (experimental)

Install from the .dmg file, on Apple Silicon Macs.

  1. Download the .dmg file (Apple Silicon) from the download page.
  2. Open the .dmg file and drag Mechvibes to Applications.
  3. The app is not notarized, so right-click it and choose Open. On newer macOS versions, try to open it once, then click Open Anyway in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
  4. In System Settings > Privacy & Security, turn on Mechvibes under both Accessibility and Input Monitoring.
  5. Quit Mechvibes from the menu bar icon and open it again, so Input Monitoring takes effect.

Linux

Install the .deb package, or run the AppImage on any distro.

  1. Download the .deb or AppImage from the download page.
  2. .deb (Debian/Ubuntu): install with sudo dpkg -i mechvibes_*_amd64.deb.
  3. AppImage (any distro): make it executable with chmod +x mechvibes-*-x86_64.AppImage then run it. If it does not start, run it with --appimage-extract-and-run.
  4. Add your user to the input group so keys are heard in every window: sudo usermod -a -G input $USER, then log out and back in. On Wayland, keys stay silent without it.

First Setup

What to do the first time the app opens.

Mechvibes opens on the Home page, ready to play with the built-in packs. From there:

  • Pick a Keyboard pack and a Mouse pack, each with its own volume slider.
  • Enable all sounds turns every sound on or off. Ctrl+Alt+M does the same from anywhere.
  • Choose the speakers or headphones to play on in SettingsthenDevices.
  • Add more packs from the sound pack library (see Sound Packs).

Basic Configuration

Where the rest of the settings live.

The rest lives in Settings:

  • General: Volume boost (up to 200%), Start at login and Start minimized to tray. Start at login is not available on Linux yet.
  • Devices: the audio output. Changes apply without a restart.
  • Updates: check for a new version and read its release notes.
  • Privacy: turn off Share anonymous usage stats.
  • Debug: a live log and Export logs for bug reports.
