Installing Sound Packs
Get packs from the library in one click, or add a zip by hand.
Expand your typing experience with new sound packs from the community.
From the library (Windows and Linux)
- Find a pack in the sound pack library and click Install in Mechvibes on its page
- Mechvibes opens and shows the pack's name, author and size. Click Install
- A pack you already have is updated the same way when the library has a newer version
On Linux with the AppImage, run it once first so the link knows where to find it.
From a .zip file
- Download the pack's .zip. On a Mac, use Download zip on the pack's page
- In Mechvibes, open Sound packs, choose the Keyboard or Mouse tab and click Add
- Click Select file and choose the .zip. Its config.json must be at the top of the zip
- Pick the new pack on the Home page
From a folder
In Sound packsthenManage, open the custom sound packs folder, copy the pack's folder in, then click Refresh. Packs made for the original Mechvibes are converted when they load, and the old config.json is kept as a backup.
Creating Custom Packs
Build your own pack in the editor and load it in the app.
You can build your own sound packs with the Mechvibes editor — assign sounds to keys and export a ready-to-import .zip.
See the Editor guide for a step-by-step walkthrough.
Choosing a License
What others may do with your pack, and which license to pick.
The license tells other people what they may do with your pack. It shows on the pack's page, and the library can be filtered by it.
- CC BY 4.0 (recommended): anyone may use, change and share the pack, as long as they credit you. A good pick when you recorded your own keyboard and want the pack to travel with your name on it.
- MIT: the same freedom, as long as copies keep your name and the MIT license text. Common for software, so pick it if you already share your work under MIT.
- CC0: you give up your rights as far as the law allows, and anyone may use the pack for anything without crediting you. Pick it when you want no strings attached.
- Personal use: people may use the pack themselves, but not share it on, change it or use it commercially. Pick it when you only allow personal use.
- Custom: your own terms, for when none of the above fits.
Personal use and Custom packs need a LICENSE.txt or LICENSE.md file in the zip that spells out the terms. The editor does not add one, so add it to the zip yourself or choose MIT, CC BY 4.0 or CC0.
Only publish sounds you have the right to share: sounds you recorded yourself, or sounds whose own license lets you share them. Choosing a license here does not give you rights to someone else's recordings.
